Your SAT Essay is scored by two readers who must follow the SAT Scoring Guide very carefully.  This rubric gives you almost a checklist of EXACTLY the specific phrases that you should include.  Just use the following phrases, and you will make it easy for the Scorer to give you every point.

The rubric tells that high scoring essay uses "clearly appropriate examples, reasons, and other evidence to support its position".  Thus, you can hit this mark by starting several sentences with:

  • For example...
  • Another reason that...
  • This evidence shows...
  • This position is strengthened by the fact that...

The rubric also instructs the Scorer that a high scoring essay demonstrates "coherence" (similar ideas held together), so get points here with LINKING phrases:

  • In addition...
  • Another example...
  • Furthermore...
  • Therefore...

Similarly, you'll get points for "smooth progression of ideas".  In addition to the linking phrases above, you can create a more nuanced and complex point of view, while still retaining the smooth progression, with CONTRAST phrases:

  • However...
  • On the other hand...
  • Although...
  • While it might be argued that...

Not only will these phrases make it easy for the Scorers to give you points based upon the Scoring Guide, they will also help you to write a great essay, because they'll force you to complete each sentence with an example that will support your argument.
